These made-from-scratch Cinnamon Twist Sticks are so good they won't last long in your bread box!

My daughter first made these while trying to find a way to use some leftover dough she had made for our "Ready Dough." We are so thankful she did! They can be quick and easy to make, but the trick is to have the dough ready and waiting in the fridge! So, here is that "Ready Dough" recipe. 

 

I suggest doubling the recipe if you have a large family or taking them to an event. My family of six had eats them up by the end of the day!   

 

Protein, Fruit, Veg, and Sweets: 

With four kids 15yrs and under, I hate for my kids to eat sweets in the morning for breakfast. So, I have been implementing the following: You must have a protein, usually mushrooms or eggs, a fruit/veg, and then you can add the sweet to your breakfast. 

 

This technique has worked great for us and gives my kiddos a great start to the day. A tip is to have the fruit and veggies out so kids can quickly grab them. That way, all you need is protein, and your cinnamon twist ready! 

 

Cinnamon Twists Ingredients:

  • Dough
  • 3 tbsp of Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of Powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of honey
  • 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tbsp of milk

Tools: 

  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet
  • Rubber brush

 

How to make Cinnamon Twists: 

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 
  • Line a baking sheet with your parchment paper. 
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar into a small bowl.

  • Melt your butter and place it in a small bowl.
  • Brush each side of the dough with butter.

  • Now sprinkle each side with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  • Make sure to lightly press the sugar mixture into the dough to ensure it sticks. 
  • Press Cinnamon & Sugar Mixture into dough
  • Cut dough into 1-inch strips. You can eyeball it if you like. Using a pizza cutter will help!

  • I like to go back and add more of the cinnamon and sugar mix to the strips.

  • Twist each strip, creating that "twist" look. 
  • Twisting the Dough
  • Place twist on a parchment-lined baking sheet. 
  • Leave enough space between the pieces to allow the sticks to expand while baking. 
  • Baked & Puffed Up Twist
  • Bake for 12-15 min until they have puffed up. I flip them halfway through, so they don't burn on the bottom half. 
  • Mix the powdered sugar, vanilla, honey, and milk for the frosting until combined. Using a frother mixer helps to mix the honey in.

Displaying Cinnamon Twist Cottage Style: 

Because the twists are long, I choose a sweet rectangular basket to place them in at home. You've seen this basket before, and it is one of my favorites because I can easily place it in the bread box. But they also look lovely displayed vertically!

A vertical display is a way to go if you can find a basket of the right size! It also makes it great for displaying at events because you can easily place other food items around them.

Whichever basket you choose, use parchment or wax paper at the bottom to protect your basket and make it easy to clean.
